The Sani Pass is a must-do trip for any serious birder, because it provides the only easy access globally to the Drakensberg Rockjumper, Drakensberg Siskin and Mountain Pipit. En route one has the chance, dependent on the season to see difficult-to-find birds such as Barratt’s Warbler, Fan-tailed Grass (Broad-tailed) Warbler and Bush Blackcap, whilst other narrowly distributed endemics such as Gurney’s Sugarbird and Buff-streaked Chat are present. In the alpine zone, several western species such as Grey Tit, Sickle-winged Chat, Layard’s Warbler and Fairy Flycatcher may be found, whilst this is probably the best place to search for the highly endangered Bearded Vulture.
Within easy reach of Himeville/Underberg, there are other habitats such as the mist belt forest, grasslands and wetlands. The forests are home to the rare Cape Parrot and Orange Thrush, and other species such as Chorister Robin, Forest Canary and Yellow-throated Warbler. This general area is home to all three of the southern African crane species (Grey Crowned, Wattled and Blue), the very rare Blue Swallow and the enigmatic seldom-recorded Short-tailed Pipit and Black-rumped Buttonquail.
DEPARTURE TIME Departure approx. 06.00 AM.

We had a great day birding with Aldo at Sani Pass!! We can definitively recommend Aldo and Roof of Africa! - Viktoria
Thank you for an incredible Sani Pass birding tour. Our guide Mondli was a fantastic driver and bird spotter. He ticked all our birds on our list and more. The tour was very informative and enjoyable. Fortunately we had great weather, sunny skies and no rain. The breakfast and lunch that was included in our tour was great! Thank you. - Steven
AN EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE! Not only was the Sani Pass Birding Tour a wonderful experience, it was exceptional and far outweighed my expectations. A well planned, well organized tour with the most awesome, experienced, learned and respectful Bird Guide... MONDLI. He was one of the best Birding Guides I have had the privilege to tour with, and I rate Mondli highly. I have loads of the most beautiful pictures from this tour. Izzy. - isabelcowley@gmail.com
We had a great time on our birding day tour op Sani Pass. Being December, the rainy season, the area was beautifully green with a lot of waterfalls visible from the pass. The guide, Aldo, was highly knowledgeable and keen to share birding tips while being friendly and professional. We saw many new species, this being our first time birding in the Drakensberg, and was very chuffed with all our sightings. Aldo was also very patient with allowing opportunity to photograph some stubborn shrub-hiding birds and answering our many questions. Will definitely recommend making use of Roof of Africa for the drive up Sani Pass as the road conditions combined with the festive rush over December can make the drive challenging. We never felt unsafe during the drive up the Pass and Aldo made very sure we were being safe the whole time. - Mariska
