The Monkey Sanctuary is a privately owned, non-subsidised sanctuary, covering approximately 7 ha, situated alongside the elephant sanctuary in one of the many kloofs of the Magaliesberg mountain range.
Monkey Sanctuary in Hartbeespoort, North West Province is one of only eight free-release primate sanctuaries globally. Our primates are received on the basis of public donations, and supported by funding generated by our guided tours and sales of our curios.
Primates, such as our squirrel, spider and capuchin monkeys, are given a new lease on life at Monkey Sanctuary. Previously raised as household pets, or bred for the pet trade, our monkeys are introduced to a wild world laden with waterfalls, lush vegetation, natural mountain springs and the chance to reside in as natural and environment as possible. Our goal is to give them the opportunity to live as they would in the wild.
Monkey Sanctuary recognizes the importance of community education. Not only are our tours highly informative, but we strive to create awareness toward the benefit of releasing primates into sanctuaries such as our own. Guests leave our tours with the understanding that monkeys do not make good pets, and that they are better suited to a natural, free-living environment.
We look forward to guiding you through our Sanctuary, and trust that you will enjoy the splendour of our natural environment to the fullest.

I really enjoyed the experience. The guide was wonderful. He put us at ease and was really knowledgeable and informative. I immediately trusted him with my safety and felt at ease being in the sanctuary. It was a privilege. - Helen
Amazing day! Monkeys are well looked after, they interact so much with you on the tour. The guide is very helpful and informative - Elanie
Oh, what an awesome experience!!! It was my 3rd time visiting the Monkey Sanctuary and I highly recommend the feeding tour. The monkeys are gentle and love interacting with you. Sometimes you get one or two on your shoulders. I had Sarah, the Spider Money sit on my shoulders and help herself to food. It was amazing. The tour guide was very good and informative. I also recommend that you book a DVD in advance to capture your experience as those memories will last a life-time. Whenever we go to JHB, the Monkey Sanctuary is on my to do list - Diane
What a great experience. We loved every second of it. Well kept and very friendly guide. Worth every cent! Would definitely recommend it and will be back - Liezl
Upon visiting Johannesburg, South Africa for the very first time, the monkey sanctuary with feeding was the tour that I looked most forward to. It did not disappoint. Everything about our experience was amazing - from the staff, including our guide, to the monkeys themselves. It was an absolutely delightful event and I look forward to attending again when we return. - Veronica
